It’s never too late to learn to play the piano or return to lessons that you took as a child. I want students to enjoy music, and remember that music enriches our lives. All you need is a piano or keyboard and some free time, plus some patience with yourself, and remember, LEARNING IS FUN!
Learning to Play the Piano as an Adult
What about adults learning to play the piano? Is it ever too late?
Have you always wanted to learn to play the piano, but never found the time?
Taking piano lessons as an adult. When you listen to music, multiple areas of your brain become engaged and active. But when you play an instrument, that activity becomes more like a full-body brain workout. Music making makes adults healthier. There are significant decreases in anxiety, depression, and loneliness following music lessons. These are factors that are crucial in coping with stress, stimulating the immune system, and enhancing overall health. So, if you have been thinking of taking up piano or any musical activity after all these years… it looks like it’s a great idea!
Five Tips for Learning Piano as an Adult
1. Set a goal. It could be a piece you’ve always loved, a level or grade to reach, or even how often to play. Having a concrete goal will help you see your own progress and give you something to work toward.
2. Have patience. Learning any instrument takes time and effort. There’s a lot involved, and it will all come with practice!
3. Set a practice routine. Even just ten minutes a day will bring results, and you’ll feel good for having done it!
4. Be okay with mistakes. They’re a natural part of learning.
5. Celebrate accomplishment and effort. We often have a tendency to focus on what we’re doing wrong. Instead, try to focus on what you’re doing right – you’ll be happier with your progress and more motivated to continue!

Music grows new connections in the brain. Because of the way our two hands are used, playing the piano develops these connections better than any other instrument. Piano study improves math skills, coordination, and multi-level thinking. Students slowly develop independence of the hands, and the ability for each hand to perform a completely different action in coordinated unison. Studies show music lessons help develop concentration, coordination, and self-discipline. Music lessons improve test scores, cognitive development, math and reading abilities, and self-esteem.
